While the major fraction of the department's clinical care is provided at the University's Hyde Park facilities and its affiliates, several specialties have developed offsite practices. Since 2005, the Section of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery provides cardiovascular surgical services at the Illiana Surgery and Medical Center in Munster, Indiana. Valluvan Jeevanandam, M.D., has been working with the owners of the for-profit health care system, which received its hospital license in 2000. The new facility includes state-of-the-art equipment for emergency care and specialties in neurology, cardiology, cardiac surgery and orthopaedics. | |

In addition to the Illiana program, which is based on an agreement with a private hospital, the Department provides outpatient care at several other facilities under the Regional Doctors Office Division owned by various entities of the University of Chicago Hospitals. The University of Chicago Hospitals Health System owns and operates a facility in Matteson. The management team includes Jeffrey Finesilver, Vice President of the Hospitals; Michael McMann, Executive Director of the UCHHS Regional Doctors Office; Brian Toolan, M.D., Assistant Professor in Orthopaedic Surgery and Medical Director; Sue Eaton, Director of Outpatient Services; and Jane Shapiro, Executive Administrator of Surgery. The site is a significant practice location for the orthopaedic surgery program, in which Richard Bielski, M.D., Roderick Birnie, M.D., Purnendu Gupta, M.D., Sherwin Ho, M.D., David Manning, Bruce Reider, M.D., and Christopher Sullivan, M.D., and Brian Toolan, MD. participate. Dana Suskind, M.D., and Fuad Baroody, M.D. provide pediatric otolaryngology services and Holly Benjamin, M.D., provides pediatric sports medicine services. Finally, the University of Chicago Department of Pediatrics owns and manages outpatient facilities in Palos Heights and Merrillville, Indiana. Several members of the Section of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, including Fuad Baroody, M.D., and Robert Naclerio, M.D., regularly provide care at these sites, as well as Loretto Glynn, M.D., and Mindy Statter, M.D. (Pediatric Surgery) and Richard Bielski, M.D., and Christopher Sullivan, M.D. (pediatric orthopaedic surgery).
Practices like these have an indirect affect as well, accounting for a significant number of surgical cases that are performed onsite. For example, 40% of the surgical volume in orthopaedic surgery comes from cases where patients made the initial contact with our surgeons at Matteson. In addition, these offsite practices have in common the opportunity to broaden the University of Chicago’s presence across the metropolitan region and create relationships which may ultimately lead to increased referrals. | | | University of Chicago Matteson health facility |
