Research Programs
The Department has long invested in its basic and translational researchers. They are working on a rich variety of projects addressing the basic mechanisms as well as therapeutic breakthroughs in their fields. With current research expenditures totaling $6 million in FY2004, the department has ranked +/- 20th in NIH rankings in recent years.

Our basic scientists devote full time to research and teaching.
  • Anita Chong, Ph.D. (Transplantation) (immunological responses to organ rejection; islet cell transplantation.
  • Louis Draganich, Ph.D. (Orthopaedic Surgery) (biomechanics of gait)
  • Jose Guevara, M.D., Ph.D. (General Surgery) (genetic viral therapies)
  • Mahesh Gupta, Ph.D. (Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery) (molecular genetics of heart failure)
  • T. C. He, M.D., Ph.D. (Orthopaedic Surgery) (immunological responses in bone tumors)
  • Karl Matlin, Ph.D. (Surgical Research) (epithelial cell biology; systems biology)
  • Carrie Rinker-Schaeffer, Ph.D. (Urology) (genetic bases in cancer)
