The Department has long invested in its basic and translational researchers. They are working on a rich variety of projects addressing the basic mechanisms as well as therapeutic breakthroughs in their fields. With current research expenditures totaling $6 million in FY2004, the department has ranked +/- 20th in NIH rankings in recent years.
