Advanced Training Fellowship
The Section of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery offers two advanced training fellowships under the joint direction of Dr. Valluvan Jeevanandam, Chief of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery, and Dr. Wickii Vigneswaran, Vice Chief of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery. We provide the full spectrum of cardiac surgery services. This includes transplantation and heart failure surgeries, such as LV reconstruction, mitral valve repair, high-risk operations with LVAD backup, and minimally invasive and robotic cardiac surgery. Other opportunities may also be available in basic and clinical research.
Advanced Cardiothoracic Surgery and Transplantation Fellowship
The heart transplantation program at the University of Chicago Medical Center offers the fellow an opportunity to interact with the abdominal organ transplantation service, which actively performs multiple organ transplantation of the heart and abdominal organs. The fellow will manage preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative care, as well as outpatient responsibilities. The fellow will gain an understanding of the intricacies involved in running a multifaceted transplant program. Through this training, the fellow will develop technical skills to excel as a surgeon, acquire a comprehensive education to pass board exams without difficulty, and receive exposure to research activity. The program prepares advanced fellows for a successful career in academic surgery and ultimately, aims to create leaders in Cardiothoracic Transplantation.
Advanced Minimally Invasive and Robotic Cardiothoracic Surgery
The minimally invasive program at the University of Chicago Medical Center is the most comprehensive in the world offering a wide range of procedures that few centers currently offer. The fellow will have the opportunity to train with Dr. Sudhir Srivastava, a leader in the field of minimally invasive and robotic techniques. Dr. Srivastava has developed innovative procedures, such as TECAB (totally endoscopic coronary artery bypass), which are changing the future landscape of cardiac surgery. The fellow will manage preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative care, as well as outpatient responsibilities. Through this training, the fellow will develop technical skills to excel as a surgeon, acquire a comprehensive education to pass board exams without difficulty, and receive exposure to research activity. The program prepares advanced fellows for a successful career in academic surgery and ultimately, aims to create leaders in cardiothoracic minimally invasive and robotic cardiothoracic surgery.
