Surgical Oncology
Surgical Oncology is representative of the many outstanding programs at the University of Chicago, rated as one of the Top 10 Cancer Centers in America. Combining unrivaled surgical oncological expertise with state-of-the-art cancer care, we offer treatment to patients in need of routine cancer care as well as those considered "untreatable" at other institutions. Surgical oncologists at The University of Chicago are recognized experts in the management of a wide range of tumors including cancers of the gastrointestinal tract (esophagus, liver, stomach, pancreas, colon and rectum), breast cancer, sarcomas and melanoma. Treatment plans for each individual patient are designed by a multidisciplinary team of surgical, medical and radiation oncologists. Major cancer operations, such as liver resections, esophagectomy and the Whipple procedure, are routinely performed at our center safely, even in those patients considered at high risk (elderly patients, patients with co-existing heart conditions, etc.). While cure is our primary objective, paramount to our mission, is improving quality of life by maintaining dignity (e.g. breast saving surgery) and preserving normal function (e.g. rectal sparing surgery). In addition to innovative surgical procedures, promising cancer treatments such as immunotherapy and gene therapy, developed at the University of Chicago Cancer Research Center are first made available to cancer patients at The University of Chicago prior to being offered at other hospitals. Finally, we have highly skilled individuals dedicated to cancer prevention and early detection, genetic counseling and support services.
