Minimally-invasive Surgery (Laparoscopy) and Endourology Fellowship Directors: Arieh Shalhav, M.D. Glenn Gerber, M.D.
The Fellowship is a two year program. The approximate time allotment is 50% clinical and 50% research. Training includes all aspects of urologic laparoscopy and endourology. Clinical responsibilities include perioperative patient management, data collection, analysis and presentation. Laboratory research focuses on development of new procedures and devices for minimally invasive surgery in the large animal model. Basic research is focused on renal ischemia studies and metabolic stone disease models in small animals.
The fellow will be involved in a large volume of surgeries: including 180 laparoscopic procedures a year (mostly kidney and prostate surgery), 30 percutaneous renal procedures a year, and 30 ureteroscopic procedures a year. He will participate in all Section of Urology education and academic activities and will be involved in resident training and research coordination and presentation.
The fellow is provided with a work station including a computer, internet access and a telephone. He will be available on a pager during working hours to respond to emergency clinical needs. He will not be taking call.
Candidates for fellowship must fulfill the following requirements. S/he: Completed an ACGME accredited or foreign urologic training program. Have a valid license to practice medicine in the State of Illinois Be fluent in reading, writing, and conversing in the English language
