Leading Expertise in MALS and Malrotation
Donald C. Liu, MD, PhD, Mary Campau Ryerson Professor and Chief of Pediatric Surgery, is internationally recognized for his expertise in pediatric minimally invasive surgery, a type of surgery that is performed through small incisions, rather than large, open incisions. In many cases, he was the first surgeon in the greater Chicago area to offer certain advanced minimally invasive procedures to treat young patients. Dr. Liu specializes in minimally invasive surgical approaches to treat pediatric diseases, including Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome, malrotation, pyloric stenosis, gastroesophageal reflux disease and pectus excavatum.
Recently, Dr. Liu was featured in an ABC News Healthbeat Report for successfully treating patients with a rare medical condition called Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome (MALS), this occurs when the median arcuate ligament compresses the celiac artery and compromises blood flow causing symptoms, such as abdominal pain shortly after eating meals, weight loss or an abdominal bruit.
