Innovative Lung Cancer Therapy
The University of Chicago’s lung cancer group provides the latest innovations in lung cancer treatments. Our multidisciplinary approach is provided by our expert thoracic surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, pulmonologists, and psychologists. We discuss each new lung cancer patient individually at our weekly multidisciplinary thoracic oncology conference, which has been held continually since 1973. This allows us to integrate the latest treatment modalities in surgical technique, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and counseling services.
We offer high risk screening, genetic counseling services, and smoking cessation counseling to address additional needs. We provide second opinions to assist in making decisions regarding treatment options. Our radiology department, located in the outpatient clinic, provides advanced imaging technology using state-of-the-art 256 slice CT scanners, available in few centers in the region, and the first permanently installed hybrid CT-PET scanners. This assists us in acquiring the most accurate information possible, in order to offer the best treatment options.
Our core team includes 5 medical oncologists, 4 radiation oncologists, and 2 thoracic surgical oncologists, offering the greatest number of years of combined clinical experience anywhere in the region. Among the latest developments in our approach to lung cancer treatment are the use of genetic testing to provide personalized chemotherapy, the introduction of biological therapies, the application of minimally invasive surgical techniques for removal of early stage cancers, and the use of highly focused radiation therapy (3D conformal therapy) for eradication of smaller tumors.
Being diagnosed with lung cancer can be a frightening experience. Our warm and knowledgeable staff are here to provide comprehensive service to help make this process less overwhelming and to assist each patient in achieving the best outcome possible.
