More than one third of adult Americans are considered obese, according to the National Institutes of Health, making this a growing national epidemic. At the Center for the Surgical Treatment of Obesity, our physicians are dedicated to crafting treatment plans that are tailored to the patient, while ensuring that the entire process is smooth and dignified.
A multidisciplinary team, comprised of a surgeon, internist, dietician, nurse practitioner and clinical psychologist, evaluates and facilitates the design of an appropriate treatment strategy. Our program is nationally recognized, in large part due to its state-of-the-art, comprehensive approach to weight reduction through surgical means. Our program has earned the American Society for Bariatric Surgery's designation as a Center of Excellence, signifying the highest standards in weight loss surgery. More recently, Aetna extended our center's designation as an Institute of Quality.
The University of Chicago is the only program in the Midwest that offers all four procedures:
- Vertical sleeve gastrectomy
- Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
- Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch
- Adjustable gastric banding
In addition, our highly skilled surgeons perform all of these procedures with minimally invasive techniques. This allows for less tissue damage and faster patient recovery.
