Orthopaedic Oncology
At the University of Chicago, we strive to provide the highest quality care for people with bone and soft tissue tumors. We are fortunate to be part of a multidisciplinary group of surgeons, adult and pediatric oncologists, diagnostic and therapeutic radiologists, radiation oncologists and pathologists that offers comprehensive care for patients with benign and malignant musculoskeletal tumors.
We hold weekly multidisciplinary conferences which review patient care and plan treatment with the oncology team. The orthopaedic oncology team--which includes respected experts in orthopaedic surgery, oncology, and other specialties--works together to design the best treatment for each patient, which may include:
- Limb-sparing surgeries
- Chemotherapy
- Radiation
- Radiofrequency ablation--surgeons use heat to destroy cancerous tissue
- Immunotherapy (for melanoma)--our team uses drugs and laboratory techniques to activate the body's own immune system to attack cancer cells
- Cytokine therapy--we use drugs called cytokines to fight kidney cancer that has spread to the bone
- Participation in clinical trials
The educational component represents the true heart of the program. This is best exemplified by the fellowship program in orthopaedic oncology. Founded by Michael Simon, MD, in 1985, the fellowship has produced 20 orthopaedic oncologists, most of whom have gone on to academic careers in musculoskeletal oncology at major universities and cancer centers across the country. The fellowship is one of the most highly sought after programs in the country. Drs. Terrance Peabody, Rex Haydon and Hue Luu underwent training in this fellowship and are currently among the faculty. The success of this program is based on the extensive exposure it affords, not only to patients with both bone and soft-tissue tumors, but also to an extensive clinical database for bone and soft-tissue tumors for clinical research and a multidisciplinary team of clinicians and scientists. The research and educational components of the oncology program in orthopaedics help to ensure that we can provide the highest quality care to patients with bone and soft tissue tumors.
