Residency Locations & Facilities
Our residency program’s superior clinical experience is supported by the multiple sites and facilities used in our residency program.
The University of Chicago Medical Center
The University of Chicago Otolaryngology Residency Training Program is based primarily at the University of Chicago Medical Center, which is adjacent to the University of Chicago campus. The academic and cultural resources of the entire academic center, the medical center, the medical school and the Biological Sciences Division are available to the residents. The medical center itself has earned its "best hospital" ranking because of the outstanding clinical and research sections. Our world-renowned head and neck oncology faculties work very closely with our surgical team in managing head and neck cancer. The research laboratories of the entire medical center are available for serious inquiry by the otolaryngology residents. In addition, the Section of Otolaryngology maintains its own laboratories.
Our state-of-the-art ambulatory care facility is located in Chicago. Other surgical groups frequently study the outpatient surgery facility in order to incorporate our innovations into their own practices. The Section of Otolaryngology in the ambulatory facility is unique in that all ENT services are physically adjacent to each other, allowing free discussion between specialists while a patient is in the office. The ENT examination rooms, ENT minor treatment rooms, the allergy treatment section, audiology, vestibular testing, cochlear implant testing and rehabilitation, and speech-language pathology are all near each other.
In addition to our onsite location, we have a number of collaborative resident exchange programs, including:
Alaska Native Medical Center - Anchorage, Alaska
The University of Chicago Otolaryngology residents have been rotating in the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage for more than 30 years. This rotation provides a change of scenery at a modern medical facility. The residents tend to concentrate on chronic ear disease but they also add many tympanoplasties and mastoidectomies to their surgical log. The rotation is very popular for both academic and non-academic reasons.
Southern Illinois University - Springfield, Illinois
The University of Chicago Otolaryngology residents have been rotating for nine years in the Otolaryngology program at Southern Illinois University. The former chairman, Horst Konrad, MD, a graduate of the University of Chicago program, has maintained ties with his original institution for decades. Dr. Robbins, the current chairman has continued the relationship. This rotation augments the thyroid surgery experience.
Mount Sinai Hospital - Chicago, Illinois
The University of Chicago Otolaryngology residents have been rotating at Mt. Sinai Hospital for 10 years. Additionally, the surgical staff at Mt. Sinai maintains active clinical appointments at the University of Chicago. Mt. Sinai is a level-one trauma center. The resident serves as a second call after a maxillofacial trauma has been diagnosed and worked up. In addition to the months of maxillofacial trauma experience, the resident is free to participate in any other ENT case.
Facial Plastic Surgery - Chicago, Illinois
The University of Chicago residents rotate in the private facial plastic surgery offices of a graduate of our program, Anthony Geroulis, MD. The resident assists and performs a wide variety of facial plastic surgeries that incorporate lasers, endoscopes and implants.
