Our experienced pancreas transplant team includes:
- Transplant nurse coordinators
- Social workers
- Financial coordinators
Together, they have many years of experience and have conducted and coordinated hundreds of surgeries.
At the University of Chicago, we offer both pancreas-only and combined kidney-pancreas transplants. Almost all patients who undergo a pancreas transplant no longer need insulin shots. For diabetics with kidney failure, a combined kidney-pancreas transplant is the greatest opportunity for a dialysis- and insulin-free lifestyle. Success rates for both of these procedures are high.
As alternative to whole pancreas transplant, which is a major surgery, patients are offered a minimally invasive procedure – pancreatic islet transplantation, which is available as a clinical study in only few selected U.S. transplant centers.
