The Department of Surgery recently hosted a highly successful faculty retreat, A.I. and the Surgeon, designed to expose faculty to the rapidly expanding capabilities of artificial intelligence and its potential to enhance efficiency across the clinical, research, educational, and academic missions. Recognizing that many surgeons could benefit from a greater understanding of emerging AI tools, the retreat focused on practical applications that can streamline workflows, improve productivity, and support innovation.
Discussions also explored the challenges and limitations of AI, including potential risks, ethical considerations, and the importance of appropriate safeguards. Faculty examined how AI can be thoughtfully integrated into various aspects of departmental work while maintaining high standards for patient care, research integrity, education, and professional judgment. The overarching goal was to help participants better understand both the opportunities and responsibilities associated with leveraging AI in surgery.
