"Discovery is Our Business"
Those four words spoken by Charles B. Huggins, MD, still define the research mission of the University of Chicago Department of Surgery. Huggins joined the Department of Surgery in 1927 and later received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his transformative discovery of how hormones govern cancer—work that changed how the world understood and treated prostate cancer and remains the foundation of hormone therapy today.
One hundred years later, this spirit of rigorous, bench-to-bedside inquiry remains embedded across our department. With more than 125 faculty and $13.3 million in annual grant funding, our surgeon-scientists and PhD investigators lead NIH-funded laboratories and clinical trials spanning cancer, the gut microbiome, transplantation and diabetes, cardiothoracic and vascular disease, tissue engineering, and health services research.
