From April 24–26, 2026, the Department of Surgery was proud to host the 2026 Latino Surgical Symposium on campus. Presented by the Latino Surgical Society (LSS), the three-day event brought together medical students, residents, fellows, faculty, and practicing surgeons from across the country to celebrate, support, and advance Latino representation in surgery.
The symposium featured a diverse program of scientific presentations, keynote speakers, panel discussions, and research showcases highlighting the accomplishments and contributions of Latino surgeons and physician-scientists. Attendees explored topics ranging from surgical innovation and health equity to mentorship, sponsorship, and career development, while sharing strategies to address challenges facing both the surgical workforce and the communities we serve.
Beyond the educational content, the symposium provided a valuable opportunity to build relationships, strengthen professional networks, and foster collaboration across all stages of training and practice. Participants engaged in meaningful dialogue, presented scholarly work, and connected with colleagues who share a commitment to advancing excellence in surgical care.
We are grateful to the Latino Surgical Society, the many speakers and presenters, and the faculty, trainees, and staff whose efforts made the symposium a success. The event reflected the Department’s ongoing commitment to fostering an inclusive academic environment while supporting the development of future leaders in surgery.
