On May 8th, the Department of Surgery welcomed our AAST/SBAS Visiting Professor, Dr. Randi Nicole Smith from Emory University. Dr. Smith's talk on "Equity in Trauma Surgery" delved into critical topics such as health disparities in trauma surgery and trauma-informed care. Drawing from innovative projects at Grady Memorial Hospital, including hospital-based violence intervention programs, Dr. Smith emphasized the importance of providing trauma-informed care to combat disparities in trauma care. Her insights on recognizing and addressing trauma's impact on patients, families, and staff offer valuable guidance for advancing equitable and inclusive practices within the UChicago Department of Surgery.
