The University of Chicago Medicine’s Comer Children’s Hospital is home to a dedicated interdisciplinary program designed to treat children with inflammatory bowel diseases, including Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and indeterminate colitis.
While medical management is often the first line of treatment, our colleagues in pediatric gastroenterology often turn to our pediatric general surgeons for collaboration in complex and challenging pediatric IBD cases. In situations where surgery is appropriate, our surgeons can offer the full array of treatment options, including minimally invasive options that allow children to return to normal life sooner.
Through a dedicated Transitional IBD Clinic, our surgeons also ensure patients receive the postoperative support they need to thrive after surgery, including nutritional guidance. Since IBD needs to be managed into adulthood, our pediatric patients will be seamlessly transitioned into the hands of our colleagues in adult gastroenterology so that they may continue to receive the high-quality GI care they deserve to lead healthy and productive lives.
